Since the early 1900s, Molycorp has been engaged in mining primarily molybdenum from the steep slopes of the mountains around Questa, New Mexico. As a result of the mining activities, potentially hazardous chemicals have been released into the surface water and ground water that eventually flow into the Red River basin. The Red River basin is home to many aquatic species, migratory birds and other wildlife. The trustees for natural resources, including the State of New Mexico and the Department of the Interior – U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, will use funds provided through settlement to conduct restoration projects to benefit injured resources.
