Project Description
The Woodbridge River is a 5-mile long tributary of the Arthur Kill. Tidal marshes were historically prevalent along the river but many areas have been channelized and filled in for development. To compensate for natural resource injuries caused by the Exxon Bayway oil spill, a 25-acre parcel containing salt marshes and forested uplands was acquired and protected in perpetuity. It was added to Woodbridge Township's Recreational and Open Space Inventory and became a part of Woodbridge River Park. Between 2006 and 2008, approximately 17.5 acres of degraded salt marsh was restored using funding from the B.T. Nautilus and Exxon Bayway oil spill settlements.
