USGS Columbia Environmental Research Center Project: Post Remediation/Restoration Monitoring of Abandoned Mine Sites

Statement of Problem: Restoration/Remediation efforts are being conducted but there is less work being done to monitor for success of these efforts. Several tools are available to monitor the success of restoration/remediation efforts. Examples include aquatic invertebrate analyses of comunity structure, in-situ fish bioassays, assessment of resident fish health, population surveys, behavioral avoidance responses, and indiviual organ, whole fish, and invertebrate residue analyses to define dose of metals in waters with elevated concentrations of trace metals. These tools can be used to provide information for managers as they progress with restoration/remediation efforts.
