On January 23, 2010 the vessel TV Eagle Otome collided with the towboat Dixie Vengeance on the Sabine-Neches Waterway at Port Arthur. The Dixie Vengeance ripped a 15-foot by 8-foot wide hole in the TV Eagle Otome’s #1 starboard cargo tank releasing approximately 9,451 barrels (356,942 gallons) of sour crude oil into the ship channel. The resulting spill spread over a 16-mile stretch of the Sabine-Neches Waterway impacting two sensitive wildlife areas (J.D. Murphree Wildlife Management Area and Texas Point National Wildlife Refuge). A number of oiled birds were observed and recovered as part of this spill as well as impacts to marsh and sand/shell beach habitat. In addition, the spill response activities closed most to the Sabine-Neches Waterway to both recreational and commercial activities due to high hydrogen sulfide levels in the air and the removal of oil for the shoreline and waterway.
