On or about November 25, 2014 and October 13, 2017, hazardous substances associated with the AdvanSix facility were released into Gravelly Run, in Hopewell, VA resulting in fish kills. The 2014 release consisted of approximately 5,500 pounds of ammonium carbonate, of which, approximately 600 pounds discharged directly to an outfall on Gravelly Run which is a tributary of the James River. The 2017 unpermitted release of phenol from the facility caused another fish kill. Together the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (collectively the Natural Resource Trustees) worked cooperatively with AdvanSix to review site-specific data and evaluate restoration alternatives to compensate for injuries to natural resources and lost services as a result of the spill and to reach a cost-effective resolution of the Natural Resource Damage Assessment and Restoration (NRDAR ) process.
