Koppers Co., Inc., operated a 62-acre wood-processing plant in Texarkana, Bowie County, Texas, between 1903 and 1961. The processes used by the Koppers plant involved creosote, pentachlorophenol (PCP), and zinc. Releases to surface waters and groundwater affected the aquatic and riparian habitat for ponds located on the site and Waggoner Creek, impacting deciduous forest, riparian deciduous forest, serial shrub land/young forest, grassland, benthic organisms, birds and open water. The case settled in 2008 and provided for the preservation of 76 acres of bottomland hardwoods within the Lennox Woods Preserve in Red River County, Texas.
