In 2008 the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (OEPA) finalized a Consent Decree that settled a Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA) claim under Section 107 of CERCLA. The site, which is located approximately 18 miles northwest of Cincinnati, Ohio, is a former uranium-processing facility. Impacts to natural resources are being remediated through restoration of wetlands, prairies, forests and other habitats. The Fernald Natural Resources Trustees have worked with other organizations to use funds from the NRDA settlement to purchase development rights through agriculture and conservation easements from willing land owners within the vicinity of the Fernald site. As of June 2015 over 3,000 acres has been protected through purchase or easement. Areas of protection are located within the groundwater recharge zone. In addition to these projects, additional wetland and stream restoration has occurred onsite at Fernald. These activities will help to improve water quality as well as provide habitat for the federally endangered Indiana bat (Myotis sodalis) which has been recorded at Fernald. The trustees expect additional stream and wetland restoration will occur as long as funds are available
