On 7 February 1990, the American Trader oil tanker spilled approximately 416,598 gallons of crude oil into the Pacific Ocean offshore of Huntington Beach, California. The cargo tank was punctured twice by the vessel’s own anchor while attempting to moor, and the oil impacted ocean waters (60 square mi—155 square km), shorelines, and marine organisms, including significant numbers of seabirds.
