On December 15, 2017 a tanker truck hauling gasoline flipped on its side due to hazardous road conditions. Both fuel containers ruptured then caught fire, releasing 11,600 gallons of gasoline to the environment. Oil sheen and the odor of gasoline were noted as far as Detroit Lake, approximately 12 miles downstream from the crash site. Delayed notification resulted in the FWS Spill/NRDA Specialist arriving on scene 58 hours after the crash. However, FWS personnel were able to collect five dead fish (whitefish and rainbow trout) and observer several other carcasses that were unrecoverable. The North Santiam also contains spring chinook (ESA-listed), winter steelhead, coastal cutthroat trout and Pacific lamprey.
