The Viburnum Trend, a sub-district of the Southeast Missouri Lead Mining District, is located in Crawford, Washington, Iron, Dent, Reynolds and Shannon counties. Mining in the Viburnum Trend is ongoing, and the sub-district remains a major producer of metals including lead, zinc, silver, and copper. For purposes of the natural resource damage assessment and restoration process, the Viburnum Trend is composed of eight major tailings impoundments, ten mines, and two smelters, mainly located in Iron and Reynolds Counties. The Trustees completed two Pre Assessment Screens and Determinations for the Viburnum Trend in 2008 and 2009, an Assessment Plan in 2009.
Restoration activities to date in the area have included riparian corridor conservation practices and land acquisition to protect migratory bird habitat.
