Project Description
The goal of this project is to aggressively and diligently establish native trees and shrubs over a five year period along the riparian corridor of Onondaga Creek through a combination of invasive species removal, dense planting and consistent weeding. Youth and young adults will lead the way in this effort through the programmatic leadership and expertise of Onondaga Earth Corps, an organization devoted to youth and workforce development program focused on the environmental.
This project is needed to address the extensive loss of riparian buffer due to construction on Phase 2 of the Onondaga Creek Walk. This new section, connecting Armory Square to Kirk Park, will be one of the most significant new parks in the city and is the culmination of a community effort, which started in 2000, to revitalize the creek. The work proposed herein follows recommendations outlined in the Onondaga Creek Revitalization Plan (2009) (OCRP) which was developed through a comprehensive process of community visioning, research and planning. Over the past decade, great investment has been made to the physical infrastructure of the creek. With this proposal, we hope to begin the long-term investment in habitat improvement along the creek.
