The Erie Canal and Southwest Lakeshore Trail System, within the Village of Solvay, is being conducted by Honeywell as part of the NRDAR Consent Decree. The project will build a new 3.2-mile trail connecting the Old Erie Canal Trail, to the existing Onondaga County Trail. The project includes, preserving Gere Lock 15 as a historical site and constructing a trail on Honeywell property parallel to Gere Lock and Belle Isle Road. Construction of the new trail has started along Gere Lock/Belle Isle Road. Trees were removed to construct the trail on Honeywell property parallel to Gere Lock/Belle Isle Road, as well as a number of trees within or very close to, the Village of Solvay Right-of-Way. The Village of Solvay Erie Canal Tree Planting project will plant new trees along the trail within the Village of Solvay Right-of-Way. These trees will help restore a natural buffer between the new trail and the residential sections of Gere Lock/Belle Isle Road and is consistent with urban forest management goals.
