Project Description

To address the impacts of unrecovered oil to the coastal environment, the Julie N Oil Spill Natural Resource Trustees awarded a $350,000 grant to the City of Portland, ME for their Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) Abatement Project in December 2000. The objective of this project was to reduce the levels of PAHs being transmitted to the harbor through Portland's storm drain system through the targeted cleaning of Portland's streets and parking lots. PAHs are typically transported into the aquatic environment through stormwater runoff. By providing a new vacuum truck and rehabilitating the city's existing truck and other equipment, this project has given the City of Portland highly effective tools to help reduce the discharge of PAHs into Portland Harbor, the Fore River, and Casco Bay. The equipment purchased with this grant was on display at the dedication ceremony for the Fore River Trail on September 27, 2001, the fifth anniversary of the Julie N oil spill.
