Project Description
To compensate for recreational use losses in Portland Harbor and the Fore River resulting from the Julie N oil spill, the Trustees awarded a $125,000 grant to the non-profit Portland Trails in October 2000 for the construction of a one-mile segment of the Fore River Trail and installation of interpretive signage. The trail construction was completed by the Maine Conservation Corps (MCC) in the summer of 2001 and dedicated in a public ceremony on September 27, 2001, the fifth anniversary of the Julie N oil spill. This addition to the Fore River Trail System along an area of shoreline heavily oiled by the spill provides a wide array of recreational and ecological benefits to the public.
