Project Description
The Watershed Institute (TWI) is an environmental non-profit organization that is devoted to protecting the water and natural resources around the Stony Brook and Millstone River, a major tributary to the Raritan River, in central New Jersey. They are based out of the 1,000-acre Watershed Reserve in Pennington, NJ. Tens of thousands of people visit the Watershed Reserve each year for outdoor recreation, to attend educational programs, or to visit the Watershed Center for Environmental Advocacy, Science, and Education.
The CDE Trustees are working with TWI to implement a project to demonstrate the benefits of green infrastructure at The Watershed Reserve. Impervious surfaces on the reserve, including existing parking areas, will be replaced with multiple types of pervious surfaces to allow for groundwater recharge, and bioswales will be installed along the entry road to absorb, manage, and treat stormwater. Monitoring devices will be installed to gage the effectiveness of different materials and methods. This project will improve water quality in the Stony Brook and provide opportunities for research and outreach to promote the use of green infrastructure to their many visitors.
