Project Description
To compensate for injuries to natural resources, the Town of Bennington, VT obtained a conservation easement with the Mount Anthony Preservation Society to permanently protect 14 acres of forested habitat including numerous vernal pools and six acres of wetlands. In addition, the Town removed an antiquated water collection system consisting of concrete cisterns and underground pipes to restore natural hydrologic conditions in the wetlands and graded the banks of the vernal pools to improve access for breeding amphibians. Under the oversight of a committee of local citizens, a nature trail with interpretive signage was also installed. Now known as the Bradford-Putnam Wetlands, the restored wetlands provide high quality habitat for migratory birds and amphibians, as well as recreational and educational opportunities for members of the community.
