Project Description
The Connecticut SubCouncil of the Housatonic River Natural Resource Trustees provided funding to the non-profit Salisbury Association Land Trust to acquire the 38.8-acre Belter property in Salisbury, CT. Located along the western shoreline of the Housatonic River, the property includes a former agricultural field containing layers of sandy, well drained loam that was deposited by hundreds of years of periodic flooding from the river. After the acquisition, the Land Trust donated a Conservation Restriction (CR) to the Town of Salisbury permanently restricting the use and development of the land in order to protect its conservation values. The Land Trust constructed a parking lot and trail system to encourage access to the Housatonic River and in 2016, the Sycamore Field Preserve opened to the public. The preserve is located east of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail and west of the Housatonic Trout Management Area.
