An agricultural-use surfactant leaked from a container on the property of Nutrien Ag Solutions (f/k/a Crop Production Services), located at 218 Simmons Drive in Cloverdale, Virginia, on July 29, 2017 (“Tinker Creek Spill”). Rain washed an estimated 165 gallons of the surfactant into an unnamed tributary of Tinker Creek and Tinker Creek. The surfactant harmed fish and other aquatic life in Tinker Creek. Together the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (collectively the Natural Resource Trustees) worked cooperatively with Nutrien Ag Solutions to review site-specific data and evaluate restoration alternatives to compensate for injuries to natural resources and lost services as a result of the spill and to reach a cost-effective resolution of the Natural Resource Damage Assessment and Restoration.
