Project Description

In January 2007, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) acquired the 35-acre Bajda property in Long Hill Township, NJ for $325,000 with funds from the Asbestos Dump and W.R. Grace & Co., Inc./Wayne Interim Storage Site natural resource damage settlements. The property was added to the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge (GS NWR), bringing the total acreage of the refuge to 7,725 acres. With this acquisition, herbaceous, scrub-shrub and forested wetlands along the Passaic River and Black Brook were protected in perpetuity. Since hunting previously occurred on the Bajda property, the land was integrated into the refuge's annual deer hunt.
