Project Description

Jacks Brook is a tributary of the Shepaug River in the Housatonic River watershed that is known for its excellent water quality and trout habitat. The non-profit Roxbury Land Trust manages several preserves along Jacks Brook, including the 56-acre Brian E. Tierney Preserve. To compensate for injuries to aquatic and riparian habitat, the Connecticut SubCouncil of the Housatonic River Natural Resource Trustees provided $5,238 to the Trout Unlimited (TU) Naugatuck Chapter of Connecticut to restore the stream bank and riparian buffer along Jacks Brook in the Tierney Preserve. An existing trail that crossed over the top of the steep stream bank was relocated away from the brook since visitor use was causing extensive erosion. TU organized a team of volunteers to remove invasive species from this area then they were joined by twelve 5th graders from the Roxbury Booth Free Elementary School to plant 82 native trees and shrubs at the site. Afterward, the TU members demonstrated a stream survey in Jacks Brook and showed the students how to identify macroinvertebrates that live on the streambed.
