Project Description

To compensate for injuries to natural resources caused by the Charles George Reclamation Trust Landfill, the Trustees transferred settlement funds to the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife (MassWildlife) to purchase the 113-acre Larter property in Dunstable, MA. Located across Dunstable Road from the Charles George Landfill, the Larter property contains diverse wildlife habitat including a former cow pasture with hedgerows and patches of trees and shrubs, emergent wetlands along Dunstable Brook, wetland forests, and mixed hardwood and white pine upland forests. After the acquisition, MassWildlife protected the Larter property in perpetuity by establishing it as the Dunstable Brook Wildlife Management Area (WMA). As with other WMAs, the site is left intentionally wild and visitors will find natural landscapes rather than maintained trails. To maintain grassland and shrubland habitats, the fields are periodically mowed between the historic stone walls.
