Project Description

In northwestern Connecticut, the Housatonic River was a popular destination for trout anglers until the CT Department of Public Health (CT DPH) issued fish consumption advisories due to contamination by polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from the General Electric (GE) Pittsfield Plant in Massachusetts. To compensate for the loss of recreational uses on the river, three parcels were purchased to improve fishing access along the Naugatuck River in the Campville section of Harwinton, CT. The three properties acquired were the 3.5-acre Avallone property, the 3.13-acre Kaminski property, and the adjacent 1.14-acre Lockwood property. With these acquisitions, anglers have improved access to a section of the Naugatuck River that is actively stocked and managed for Atlantic salmon, brown trout and rainbow trout by the CT Department of Energy & Environmental Protection (CT DEEP).
