Project Description

To compensate for injuries to natural resources caused by the Charles George Reclamation Trust Landfill, the Trustees provided settlement funds to the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife (MassWildlife) to purchase the 75-acre Greene property in Tyngsborough, MA. Located along the Tyngsborough/Dunstable Town line, the property is mainly forested with some open shrubland habitats. The parcel was purchased by the Town of Tyngsborough for $1.4 million in 2001 but became a financial stress on the municipality and the Town considered subdividing the property and selling it for development. The Greene property is abutted to the north and west by the Farnsworth Wildlife Refuge in Dunstable and the Elbow Meadow Wildlife Management Area (WMA) to the south. With the purchase of this land, a contiguous block of approximately 180 acres of forest was protected in perpetuity. The Greene property was subsequently incorporated into the Elbow Meadow WMA, expanding its total size to 210 acres.
