Project Description

To compensate for recreational use losses associated with the discharge of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) into the Housatonic River from the General Electric (GE) Pittsfield Plant in Massachusetts, public access improvements were made around Ball Pond Brook in New Fairfield, CT. A new hiking trail with an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessible walkway and bridge over the brook was constructed behind the New Fairfield Senior Center, improving access to the Hubbell House Museum. Wood chips were spread on the Greenway Trail to reduce erosion and new educational kiosks were installed. The town also received funding to remove invasive species along the trails and planted native trees, including black spruce, eastern white pine, and tamarack.
