Project Description

This acquisition includes approximately 350 acres in Augusta County, VA, and contains some of Virginia’s most outstanding conservation sites, including sinkhole pond wetlands and upland forests that are important habitat for several rare species. The property was dedicated as a new Natural Area Preserve (Lyndhurst Ponds Natural Area Preserve) under the Natural Area Preserves Act, owned and managed by Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (VDCR), and protected in perpetuity. It is the 65th Natural Area Preserve for the Commonwealth of Virginia. VDCR will implement restoration activities over several years to improve habitat and restore natural vegetation. Restoration activities will include: (1) restoring 81 acres of former pasture lands to native grasslands composed of grasses, forbs, and legumes; (2) restoring 55 acres of former agricultural fields to oak-dominated woodlands; (3) prescribed burns over 309 acres; and (4) invasive species control across all 349 acres. https://www.dcr.virginia.gov/natural-heritage/natural-area-preserves/lyndhurst
